Pandora's Box

Pandora's Box

In Greek Mythology, Prometheus and Epimetheus were the sons of Lapetus. Their uncle Zeus, who was king of the Gods, gave them the task of making living creatures.

Epimetheus made many different animals and Prometheus made man. Epimetheus gave gifts to all his animals such as flight to the birds and a shell to the turtles. Prometheus made man in Gods own image and had nothing left to give so he stole a flame from the sun and gave man the gift of fire.

Zeus was angry with Prometheus for this and tied Prometheus to a cliff where he was pecked by birds. In return Zeus also gave Epimetheus a beautiful woman to be his wife for making the animals but there was also a trick involved with this which was to be a punishment for man who he was also angry with.

Zeus gave Pandora and Epimetheus a box for their wedding day but it was given under strict instructions that it was never to be opened. Epimetheus was never tempted to open the box but Pandora was curious and when Epimetheus was away, the temptation became to much for Pandora and she opened the box.

When the box was opened all of the sins of the world was released. The sins were disease, pain, cruelty, jealousy, disappointment, hate, war and death. Pandora slammed the lid shut and only one thing was left in. This was hope. Hope implored Pandora to release her so that the world had something that was not evil in it. Pandora relented and hope flew first to Prometheus to give him hope of rescue and then to the rest of the world.
